The type of feet you have. There are three basic categories of foot type depending on where you usually place your weight on your foot. Pronator type is when a feet with a low or flat arch. One with a pronator type of shoe should buy shoes that support the mid foot area. Supinator type is when a feet has a high arch. One with supinator feet needs extra cushioning in the mid-arch to absorb shock as well as stabilize the heel. Neutral type is a feet type with an average arch. One with neutral type needs to wear down the heels of shoes evenly. He can also wear any shoe type.
Choosing the right shoe and fit as well will prevent you from any foot problems as well as minimizes the risk of injury, and maximize your athletic performance.
